Spirulina is a blue-green algae, and is believed to be one of the oldest plant life forms on Earth. It was used for centuries by the Aztecs in Mexico and by people living in the Lake Chad area in Africa. It became famous after it was successfully used by NASA as a dietary supplement for astronauts on space missions.
Spirulina contains all the essential amino acids and omega-3 fatty acids, including fat-soluble vitamins A, E, and K, beta carotene and minerals. It is also rich B vitamins and iron, is anti-inflammatory and packed with antioxidants.
Because of these qualities, spirulina makes a great addition to your skin care routine. The anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce and prevent breakouts and increase your skin’s metabolism which enables faster healing and also prevents bacteria overgrowth.
Spirulina is also rich in phytonutrients and carotenoids, which are the antioxidants that can help defend your skin and body from free radicals. This helps promote younger-looking, healthy skin. And thanks to the strong antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, there is evidence to suggest that spirulina may help in collagen production and anti-aging.
There are many skincare products available that have spirulina in them including scrubs, masks, and cleansers. If you use a face mask with spirulina, do not forget to moisturise afterwards, to keep your skin hydrated and smooth.
