We were so excited to learn about some of the supporting studies that are making Bakuchiol known as the plant-based Retinol of the skincare world. This plant-based alternative is derived from the Babchi Herb and has fantastic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The benefits of bakuchiol are very similar to those of retinoids but without the redness, skin irritation and photochemical instability that the synthetically produced retinol is associated with. Bakuchiol is known to stimulate collagen production which has the benefit of reducing wrinkles and hyperpigmentation while increasing the skin’s elasticity and resilience. Because of this, it has been found to assist with treating fine lines, breakouts and dark spots. It’s a great option for those who shop vegan, clean, and in consideration of skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis. It is also useful in products formulated for acne prone skin as it prevents the process of lipid peroxidation (oxidative degradation of lipids resulting in cell damage) in the skin’s sebum by keeping the acid mantle active. This reduces the overproduction of bacteria on the skin’s surface.

About some of the other ingredients included:

Organic rosa damascena (Rose) flower distillate and rosa damascena (Rose) essential oil are high in antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties, which helps to soothe skin inflammation and irritation caused by dry skin. This also makes it especially suitable for sensitive skin. Additionally, these properties also help to reduce skin redness and even puffiness. Rose is also antibacterial and a natural antiseptic which aids in reducing occurrence of acne as well as promoting healing.

Organic plukenetia volubilis L. (Sacha Inchi) oil is obtained from the seeds of the plant. It is a light oil which is absorbed quickly and is a great emollient (softens and moisturises the skin).  It is rich in amino acids, and Vitamins A and E, its strong antioxidant properties make it ideal for reducing the appearance of mature and aging skin. It also has a soothing effect on dry or irritated skin, nails, scalp, and hair. t is one of the richest vegetable sources of Omega-3, Omega-6, and Omega-9 fatty acids. 

Organic rubus idaeus (Red Raspberry Seed) oil. This oil is rich in Ellargic acid which is a natural antioxidant, renown for its skin care benefits. The oil has also been shown to have some antimicrobial properties and high moisturising properties.

Organic Punica Granatum Pericarp (Pomegranate) Extract excels as a moisturising, anti-ageing and skin restructuring agent in all skin care applications. By stimulating the skins’ aquaporins (the channels through which water passes in and out of the skin) the natural flow of water in the skin can be restored. This is critical for hydrating the epidermis and rendering the skin supply, smooth and young looking. This action is also responsible for preventing skin ageing.

Organic Euterpe Oleracea (Acai) Fruit Extract. Acai does just as much for your skin externally as it does internally. Acai berry yields a stable oil rich in anthocyanins and flavonoids and contains thiamine, riboflavin and niacin (water-soluble). Acai protects the skin from external pollutants, supports the production of collagen and is highly moisturising, along with being an antioxidant, anti-ageing, emollient and containing essential fatty acids and vitamins A,B & C.

hippophae rhamnoides (Seabuckthorn) seed oil – is high in natural tocopherols, carotenoids, and fatty acids as well as containing Vitamin C, E and A, Omegas 3, 6, 9 and 7, along with many other nutrients and antioxidants, making it highly recommended for use in skin care products. It is recommended for all skin types, but is especially useful in formulas for mature skin  to help reduce the visible signs of dry or aging skin. The anti-bacterial properties of the sea buckthorn oil also make it a great choice in cosmetics, especially for facial and eye creams. 

Squalane (olive) mimics the skin’s natural squalane, which is the skin’s main lipid, emollient, built-in moisturiser and antioxidant. Olive Squalene works to replace this lost hydration and antioxidant protection, helping to combat dry skin and keep it smooth and supple without leaving an oily finish.

Hyaluronic acid powder is great for hydrating the skin as well as delivering active ingredients deeper into the skin. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the skin and by increasing the amount present, we can boost the skin’s hydration which can result in a more comfortable complexion without a greasy or sticky skin feel. This vegan powder is a polysaccharide occurring in all our body cells, providing protection against ageing, pollution and drying. It  serves as a water reservoir keeping us hydrated. 

Boswellia (frankincense) resin oil has astringent and cytophylactic (cell protection) qualities that help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and skin imperfections such as discoloration. The anti-inflammatory properties are known to soothe inflamed skin by reducing the sensations of redness, swelling, and itching.
